Texas Brand Re-registration

Texas brands have to be re-registered every 10 years. Brand registration takes place in the year ending with a 1. The next brand re-registration began August 31, 2011 and will close February 29, 2012. If you do not re-register your brand during this period then your brand will be up for grabs. Remember, the brand must be re-registered regardless of the date it was originally registered. You will need to register your brand in the county or counties that you are running livestock in. To register your brand you will need to go to the County Clerks Office and submit the paperwork. All brands must be registered by the county clerk for the brand to be considered a legal means of ownership.

After drought has occurred, It is not full steam ahead!

This past year in Texas has been taxing on our pastures, livestock and our pocketbooks. Even with the recent rains we have received, area pastures remain in poor condition, and do not expect them to rebound anytime soon. With cooler nights the forage growing season is wrapping up.

When we do have ample rains and the drought does break, don't restock back to your pre-drought stocking rates right out of the block. Conditions do not immediately return to normal. Implement a grazing plan and allow ample rest for pastures to recover. There are many pastures in the area that will require total deferment for a period to allow adequate recovery. Some areas may even have to be re-seeded with native or improved grasses. Remember, restock slowly as forage conditions improve.
